Testimonial from past intern

Who are you? Where do you study?

I am Stijn Hoenjet, and I study International Business at Maastricht University.

Why were you looking for an internship/workplace, and how did you end up at Schils?

I was looking for an internship because I wanted to spend my six-month gap (between classes and a study abroad program) in a meaningful way. I posted a message on LinkedIn, which was noticed by a Schils employee who then contacted me.

Looking back on your time at Schils: What does an internship at Schils entail? What tasks did you perform?

An internship at Schils means gaining insight into many aspects of the business world, including marketing, sales, supply chain, customer service, administration, production, and technical service. My assignment was to evaluate and optimize the CRM system used by Schils. In short, this involved creating an action plan, conducting interviews with employees, identifying improvements, presenting findings, and implementing changes in the system.

What are three things you learned that you’ll take forward in your studies or career?

For the future, it’s helpful that I now know what an office environment is like and understand the roles of various departments. It’s also beneficial that I gained hands-on experience during the four months of my internship at Schils.

What did Schils / employees / supervision do well?

If you encounter an issue, the employees are always willing to help. The guidance for your assignment is excellent. They are flexible if you need to leave early or arrive at the office later.

Would you recommend Schils as an internship location?

Yes, it’s a relatively flat organization, which allows you to gain insights into all aspects of the business world and the company itself. Plus, you get Limburgse vlaai quite often, so I’d recommend coming by bike!

Do you have application tips for future students interested in interning at Schils?

Definitely reach out to the organization or its employees, be honest about yourself, and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. If you have a different perspective on a condition, be upfront—they will work with you to find the best solution.  What skills do you think are essential for working at this office? You need to be social and not shy. You should be able to work independently, but if you’re unsure about something or have questions about your tasks, don’t hesitate to ask—you’ll get the help you need. It’s also useful to have a good command of English and German since it’s an international company with employees and customers from all over the world. Additionally, you need to be able to work seriously but should also expect to encounter plenty of “office humor.”

Do you already have concrete plans for the future?

My concrete plans for the future are to successfully complete my studies, find a good, enjoyable job, and perhaps start something of my own one day.
