Jersey calves

Jersey calves have a higher maintenance energy requirement compared to other cattle breeds. For efficient growth and optimal health, they need a higher fat and protein content in their milk feeding. To match the natural ratio of fat and protein in Jersey milk (5-6% fat and 3.8-4.2% protein), the concentration of calf milk replacer is often increased to 150 to 200 grams per liter of milk.

Globally, there is significant variation in milk feeding schedules for Jersey calves, ranging from standard to very intensive or even unlimited milking schedules. We recommend an intensive milking schedule for Jersey calves. This schedule can be paired with our high-quality milk replacers, such as Novilac Turbo Start or a product from our Eurolac range, which contains at least 50% skimmed milk powder or is based on whey powder with a high level of dairy protein.

Jersey calves have a shorter gastrointestinal tract compared to other cattle breeds, resulting in a relatively lower feed intake per day. This makes it essential for Jersey calves to receive high-quality and concentrated feed in addition to their milk feeding. These calves are fast eaters and require feed such as concentrates and roughage, as well as fresh drinking water early in the rearing period.
